Here’s a recipe for a hot oatmeal cereal mix you can make cheaply at home. What I mean by ‘cheaply’ is buying the oatmeal in bulk and not adding expensive toppings to it. Of course, if it’s in your budget, you can change the spices, or ommit them altogether and add different things to it. Some ideas are:
Dried blueberries and some non-dairy coffee whitener (pick the flavor you think would work with the blueberries)
Dried banana chips and dried strawberries
Chocolate chips and silvered almonds
Raisins and more cinnamon
6 cups quick cooking oats (I used a mix of instant oatmeal, and old-fashioned oatmeal that I ran through the food processor few times)
1 1/3 cups nonfat dry milk (add more if you want it creamier. You can also add some non-dairy coffee whitener)
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 Tbs. cinnamon
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. ginger powder
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. coriander powder
Pour into an airtight container.
Shake well before you use the mix.
To make some cereal, put 1/2 cup mix in a bowl and add a bit more than 1/2 cup boiling water. Cover and let stand for 3 minutes. Adjust the amount of water to your liking.
